Baked Mashed Potatoes with Savoury Sesame Gravy

Creamy baked mashed potatoes topped with a rich, savoury sesame gravy—comforting, flavourful, and perfect as a main or side dish.

  • 4 large potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups vegetable broth
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 1 tbsp toasted sesame seeds
  • 1/4 tsp ground ginger

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a baking dish.
  2. Boil potatoes in salted water until tender, then drain.
  3. Mash potatoes with butter, milk, salt, and pepper until smooth. Spread evenly in the baking dish.
  4. Heat olive oil in a saucepan and sauté onions and garlic until softened.
  5. Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute to form a roux.
  6. Whisk in vegetable broth, soy sauce, sesame oil, and ginger. Simmer until thickened.
  7. Pour the sesame gravy over the mashed potatoes.
  8. Bake for 20 minutes or until heated through and lightly golden on top.
  9. Sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds before serving.

Notes

  • Use Yukon Gold potatoes for extra creaminess.
  • Add mushrooms to the gravy for deeper flavour.
  • Make the gravy ahead of time for faster prep.
