A rich, velvety chocolate mousse topped with light, fluffy whipped cream—an elegant yet easy dessert perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 oz semisweet chocolate, chopped
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 3 large eggs, separated
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup heavy cream (for folding)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup heavy cream (for whipped cream topping)
  • 2 tbsp powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. In a heatproof bowl set over simmering water, melt the chocolate and butter together, stirring until smooth. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  2. Whisk in the egg yolks one at a time until fully combined.
  3. In a separate bowl, whip the egg whites with the granulated sugar until stiff peaks form.
  4. In another bowl, whip 1 cup of heavy cream with vanilla extract until medium peaks form.
  5. Gently fold the whipped cream into the chocolate mixture.
  6. Fold the egg whites into the mousse mixture in two additions until fully incorporated.
  7. Divide the mousse into serving glasses and refrigerate for at least 2 hours.
  8. Before serving, whip the remaining 1 cup of heavy cream with powdered sugar until soft peaks form and spoon or pipe onto the chilled mousse.

Notes

  • For a stronger chocolate flavor, use bittersweet chocolate.
  • Add a splash of coffee or espresso powder to enhance the chocolate.
  • Chill the serving glasses beforehand for a firmer mousse.
