Classic French Toast with Maple Syrup

A classic breakfast favorite made with thick slices of bread soaked in a sweet vanilla-cinnamon egg mixture and cooked until golden brown, served with warm maple syrup.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 8 slices thick-cut bread (brioche or challah recommended)
  • 2 tbsp butter for cooking
  • Maple syrup, for serving

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, sugar, and salt.
  2. Preheat a skillet or griddle over medium heat and add a bit of butter.
  3. Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, coating both sides but not oversoaking.
  4. Place the soaked bread onto the hot skillet and cook for 2–3 minutes per side, until golden brown.
  5. Repeat with remaining slices, adding more butter as needed.
  6. Serve warm with maple syrup drizzled on top.

Notes

  • Use day-old bread for best texture—it absorbs the mixture without becoming soggy.
  • Add a pinch of nutmeg for extra warmth and flavor.
  • For crisp edges, cook with a mix of butter and a little oil.
