Classic Hearty Chili

A classic, hearty chili packed with ground beef, beans, tomatoes, and warm spices — perfect for a cozy, comforting meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 green bell pepper, diced
  • 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes
  • 1 can (15 oz) kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 can (15 oz) black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 can (8 oz) tomato sauce
  • 2 tbsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp salt (or to taste)
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 cup beef broth

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the onion, bell pepper, and garlic. Cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  2. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon.
  3. Stir in chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, oregano, salt, and black pepper. Cook for 1 minute to bloom the spices.
  4. Add diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, kidney beans, black beans, and beef broth. Stir to combine.
  5. Bring the chili to a simmer, then reduce heat to low. Cover and cook for 30–45 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. Serve hot with toppings like cheese, sour cream, or green onions.

Notes

  • For thicker chili, simmer uncovered for the last 10–15 minutes.
  • Substitute turkey or plant-based meat for a lighter version.
  • Chili tastes even better the next day as flavors develop.
