- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/2 cup milk
- 2 tbsp melted butter
- 1 large egg
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- Vegetable oil, for frying
- For Apple Filling:
- 2 medium apples, peeled, cored, and finely chopped
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tbsp butter
- For Coating:
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- In a small saucepan, melt butter and add chopped apples, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Cook over medium heat for 5–7 minutes or until apples are soft. Set aside to cool.
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
- In another bowl, whisk together milk, melted butter, egg, and vanilla extract.
- Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir until a soft dough forms.
- Heat vegetable oil in a deep pot to 350°F (175°C).
- Using a spoon or cookie scoop, drop small amounts of dough into the hot oil and fry until golden brown, about 2–3 minutes per side. Work in batches to avoid overcrowding.
- Remove donut holes with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
- Fill a piping bag fitted with a small tip with the cooled apple filling. Poke a hole in each donut hole and pipe in the filling.
- In a shallow bowl, mix granulated sugar and cinnamon for coating. Roll warm donut holes in the mixture to coat evenly.
- Serve warm and enjoy!
Notes
- Use tart apples like Granny Smith for a better flavor contrast.
- Ensure apple filling is cooled before piping to avoid melting the donut interior.
- Donut holes are best eaten fresh but can be stored for up to 1 day.
- You can bake them in a donut hole pan at 350°F (175°C) for 10–12 minutes as a healthier option.
