Homemade Focaccia Bread with Olive Oil and Herbs

Homemade Focaccia Bread with Olive Oil and Herbs is a soft, airy Italian flatbread known for its crisp golden crust, rich olive oil flavor, and aromatic herb topping—perfect as a side or for sandwiches.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (about 110°F)
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/4 cup olive oil (plus more for greasing and drizzling)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh rosemary, chopped (or 1 teaspoon dried)
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • Flaky sea salt, for topping

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add flour, salt, and olive oil to the yeast mixture. Mix until a sticky dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8–10 minutes until smooth, or mix with a stand mixer using a dough hook for 5–6 minutes.
  4. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth or plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm place for 1–1.5 hours or until doubled in size.
  5. Transfer dough to a greased baking sheet or pan. Stretch it out gently to fit the pan.
  6. Cover and let it rise again for 20–30 minutes.
  7. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
  8. Use your fingers to dimple the surface of the dough, then drizzle generously with olive oil. Sprinkle with rosemary, oregano, and flaky sea salt.
  9. Bake for 20–25 minutes or until golden brown.
  10. Let cool slightly before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • Use a generous amount of olive oil for a crispy bottom crust.
  • Add toppings like sliced olives, cherry tomatoes, or caramelized onions for variation.
  • Best enjoyed fresh but can be reheated or frozen.
