Homemade Tomato Apple Chutney

A tangy, sweet, and spiced condiment made with ripe tomatoes and apples, perfect for pairing with cheese, grilled meats, or as a sandwich spread.

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 4 large tomatoes, chopped
  • 2 apples, peeled, cored, and chopped
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon chili flakes (optional)
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Add chopped onion and garlic; sauté until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes.
  3. Stir in chopped tomatoes and apples; cook for another 5 minutes.
  4. Add brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, chili flakes (if using), and salt.
  5. Bring mixture to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer uncovered for 45–60 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened.
  6. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  7. Transfer to sterilized jars and store in the refrigerator for up to 1 month or process for longer storage.

Notes

  • Great as a topping for grilled meats or with cheese platters.
  • Adjust spices to taste for more or less heat.
  • For smoother texture, blend partially or fully after cooking.
  • Can be canned using proper sterilization methods for longer shelf life.
