Old-Fashioned Chocolate Glazed Donuts

These old-fashioned chocolate glazed donuts are fried to golden perfection with a rich chocolate glaze that sets beautifully. They’re crispy on the outside, soft inside, and evoke the nostalgia of classic bakery-style donuts.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup sour cream or buttermilk
  • 2 tbsp melted butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Oil for frying (canola or vegetable)
  • 1 cup chocolate chips or chopped chocolate
  • 1/3 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tbsp corn syrup (optional, for glaze shine)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg.
  2. In another bowl, beat eggs and sugar until light. Add sour cream, melted butter, and vanilla extract and mix until smooth.
  3. Add dry ingredients to wet and mix into a soft dough. Cover and chill for 30 minutes.
  4. On a floured surface, roll out dough to 1/2-inch thick. Cut into donut shapes using a donut cutter.
  5. Heat oil in a deep pot to 350°F (175°C). Fry donuts in batches, 1–2 minutes per side, until golden. Drain on paper towels.
  6. For glaze: Melt chocolate with cream and corn syrup in a heatproof bowl over simmering water or microwave in short bursts. Stir until smooth.
  7. Dip warm donuts into glaze and place on a rack to set.

Notes

  • Chilling the dough helps it firm up and hold shape.
  • Maintain oil at 350°F for even cooking and less oil absorption.
  • Let glaze set completely before stacking donuts.
  • Use parchment for easy cleanup when glazing.
