Powdered Sugar Snowball Cookies

Powdered Sugar Snowball Cookies are tender, buttery shortbread-style cookies filled with finely chopped nuts and coated generously in powdered sugar — a classic holiday favorite that melts in your mouth.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar (plus more for rolling)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup finely chopped pecans or walnuts

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and 1/2 cup powdered sugar until light and fluffy. Mix in vanilla extract.
  3. Gradually stir in flour and salt until a soft dough forms. Fold in chopped nuts.
  4. Roll dough into 1-inch balls and place them on the prepared baking sheet, spaced 1 inch apart.
  5. Bake for 12–15 minutes, or until bottoms are lightly golden. Tops should remain pale.
  6. Cool cookies for 5 minutes, then roll them in powdered sugar while still warm.
  7. Let cookies cool completely, then roll in powdered sugar again before serving for a snowy finish.

Notes

  • Double rolling in powdered sugar helps give the cookies their signature snowy look and flavor.
  • Cookies can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week.
  • Use finely chopped nuts to keep the cookies from crumbling.
  • These cookies freeze well — roll in final powdered sugar coating after thawing.
