Sweet and Sour MEAT

A classic takeout favorite, Sweet and Sour Meat features tender, bite-sized meat pieces coated in a flavorful, tangy sauce made with vinegar, sugar, and ketchup, often served with stir-fried vegetables and rice.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 500g pork, beef, or chicken, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch (for coating)
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Oil for deep frying
  • 1/2 red bell pepper, chopped
  • 1/2 green bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1/2 cup pineapple chunks (canned or fresh)
  • 1 tablespoon oil (for stir-frying)
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar or white vinegar
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch mixed with 2 teaspoons water (slurry)

Instructions

  1. Season meat with salt and pepper. Dip in beaten egg, then coat with cornstarch.
  2. Heat oil in a deep pan or wok. Fry meat pieces in batches until golden and crispy. Drain on paper towels and set aside.
  3. In a small bowl, mix ketchup, vinegar, sugar, soy sauce, and water to make the sweet and sour sauce.
  4. Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a wok or large skillet over medium heat. Stir-fry onion and bell peppers for 2-3 minutes.
  5. Add pineapple chunks and stir for another minute.
  6. Pour in the sweet and sour sauce and bring to a simmer. Add cornstarch slurry and stir until the sauce thickens.
  7. Add fried meat to the sauce and toss to coat evenly.
  8. Serve hot with steamed rice.

Notes

  • Can be made with pork, chicken, or beef depending on preference.
  • For a healthier version, air fry or bake the meat instead of deep frying.
  • Adjust sugar and vinegar to taste for a more sweet or tangy flavor.
  • Use fresh pineapple for a brighter taste.
